Frequently Asked Questions

At North Texas Neuropsychology & Behavioral Medicine Services, we strive to make our process clear and helpful so you can be informed every step of the way. Below are answers to some common questions patients and families have when considering or preparing for a neuropsychological evaluation.

If you don't see your question here, please reach out to us! We want you to feel confident through each step of the process.

How do I know if testing is something that is needed?

Testing is recommended if there are concerns about learning difficulties, mood or behavior concerns, memory or attention problems and academic struggles. Testing provides a deep understanding of intellectual functioning as well as an individual's cognitive strengths and weaknesses. The results of testing are often needed to plan/continue treatments and interventions and acquire accommodations within a school or workplace setting.

Do you offer therapy, counseling, medication, or other treatments?

No, our office assesses and diagnoses cognitive difficulties/disorders only. We have resources and recommendations for psychiatrists, counselors, specialized therapy centers, and other programs. Call, email, or text to request any of our referral lists.

Can I do a virtual evaluation?

Our office does not offer virtual testing. However, patients and families have the option to meet over Zoom with Dr. Taylor for feedback appointments to go over scores and results.

Will Insurance cover the evaluation?

Coverage varies by plan. Our office is in-network with major insurers like Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and United Healthcare. Cost will depend on your specific benefits. We do not take any payments ahead of service in case a situation arises that may result in patients needing to move or cancel their appointments. For more information, click here.

How do I schedule an appointment?

A few things need to happen before we can schedule an evaluation.

First, reach out to us via text, phone call, or our online submission form. We will need some general patient information, details about the type of services you are seeking and insurance information (if applicable). If our office is able to help, we will discuss current scheduling and wait times.

Second, our office will check your insurance details. Cost varies patient-to-patient depending on each policy holder's mental health benefits. After we have gathered this information, we will have a second conversation to discuss the estimated cost.

Finally, if you still wish to move forward, we will look at potential dates and times and schedule the assessment. We will immediately send a confirmation message via text with all of the appointment details.

Do you have a cancellation list?

Yes! If you would like to be added to our cancellation list, please let us know at the time of scheduling. The cancellation list is reserved for patients and families who have appointments with our office. We can not add prospective patients to our cancellation list without a scheduled appointment.

Important! Save our contact information! In the event that a slot becomes available for a sooner date, we will reach out via phone call to patients on our cancellation list from oldest to newest. If there is no answer, we will continue reaching out to the next patient on the list.

What if I need a sooner appointment?

Our cancellation list is the best way to try for an earlier appointment. We understand waiting may not be an option for more urgent cases and that our current scheduling timeframe may not be ideal for some patients and families. If this is the case, we recommend a searching for other providers through your insurance company or feel free to ask for our alternate referral list.

When do I get the results?

Feedback sessions are scheduled as soon as we have all paperwork and questionnaires returned. This may take anywhere from days, weeks or even months in some cases. It is entirely dependent on how soon individuals are able to return all paperwork, questionnaires and digital forms.

Will testing be done in multiple sessions?

No, most evaluations are done in a single day with the exception of young children. If it becomes hard for your child to focus or they become fatigued before we complete testing, additional time will be scheduled at a later date.

How long will testing take?

Evaluations are done in a single day* and take several hours (often 4–6) depending on the areas being assessed. During this time, patients will complete various standardized tasks that may include puzzles, questions, cognitive and academic tasks, and activities designed to measure processing skills, memory, attention, and emotional functioning etc. Breaks are provided as needed throughout the day.

*If your child becomes fatigued or sleepy we may need to schedule a second appointment to complete testing. This is primarily the case for children under age five. If additional testing is needed, we will schedule more time after the initial testing is complete.

How do I prepare for an appointment?

Patients should get a good night sleep the day before their appointment and have breakfast prior to their arrival. Drink plenty of water and wear comfortable clothes. Complementary snacks and drinks are provided at the office but feel free to bring your own if you prefer. We recommend this for patients with allergies or dietary restrictions.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring your ID, insurance card (if applicable), new patient paperwork, and any relevant medical or educational records. If the appointment is for your child and they have any allergies or dietary restrictions, please pack their favorite snacks and lunch.

What happens the day of testing?

Testing appointments are scheduled on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so patients will need to plan accordingly with school or work (office notes provided as needed). Appointments begin at 9am or 10am with the first hour consisting of an intake appointment for parents and adult patients (18+). During this time you will meet with Dr. Taylor and discuss your concerns and relevant background and history information.

If the evaluation is for your child, they will get started with basic IQ and academic testing while you meet with Dr. Taylor for the intake appointment. Parents are free to leave the office after the intake is complete while your child continues testing. Our office will reach out about thirty minutes before the evaluation is finished so you know when to return for pickup. Parents are also welcome to stay in our waiting room for the duration of testing if preferred.

Do you take breaks throughout the day?

Yes! Testing is not continuous and we take several breaks to give patients a rest between tasks. We have complimentary snacks, juice and coffee at the office to enjoy during those times.

Can I observe my child while they are testing?

Our building is not equipped with two-way mirrors, therefore observing your child is not an option. If you wish to remain at the office while your child completes their evaluation, you will be able to see and get updates from them during break times. Parents are not allowed in the room while testing is being administered as it may skew results.

Is lunch provided?

For adult patients, testing usually takes around four hours, (including the intake appointment). Because of this, we do not take a lunch break; we will make time for shorter breaks if needed for snacks or drinks. Please plan accordingly and have breakfast before arrival.

For children ages 5+ testing usually takes between five to six hours depending on primary concerns and what we are evaluating for. Because of the longer day, lunch will be provided. Children will stay at the office and Dr. Taylor will use this time to get to know your child better.

For toddlers, babies, and lower functioning patients, appointments are scheduled in three hour blocks. Due to shortened time, we do not take a lunch break. Please bring your child's favorite snacks or drinks for break and make time for breakfast before arrival.
